If you could see this posted before the 1st of April then that means I have succeeded admirably in logging in to the Internet and to the blogging back end, in a place on earth where such thing is still considered a luxury.

It was getting more and more chock-a-block at the Maharlika. A somewhat popular band from the Philippines, D'Baywalk Bodies, has come for a live performance at one of Dubai's most celebrated filipino night clubs.
Teaching you Dubai's Language

Locals, Indians, Filipinos, Arabs, Iranians and Brits form up almost all the population of Dubai. English and Arabic are the official languages in the UAE but there appears to be however a language that is a mixture of everything and is used by almost everyone. This post will serve as a crash course for anyone planning to come to Dubai. I'll keep updating this as much as possible.

happy new year to each and every one of you. may all your wishes come true. please take a look back at your 2005 and see what wrong you've done, try not to do them again, and see what you've achieved and try to know how you've achieved it.

the old town of damascus

to make old damascus an enjoyable experience..

... i was thinking we might do the following:
* pedestrianise the whole lot of those narrow streets and alleys, pave them with stones and make some shapes (flowers, fezzes, words, etc.) with colour stones.
* keep few (say less than ten) major streets with several pedestrian crossings guarded with traffic lights.
* maintain quaint-looking lampposts in the streets with nice looking dustbins attached to some of them
* install indicative maps at reasonable distances to guide the way to major attractions and hot spots (mosques, churches, libraries, historic houses, restaurants, bars, etc.)
* publish a rich printed guide in several languages with a listing of all activities and venues in the old town.
* install some vending machines of water, soft drinks, chocolate, etc.
* introduce small service cars to work on pedestrianised areas at specific timings (collect garbage and other similar services).
* try to plant as many trees as possible along the alleys (jasmine or any other tree that is popular in damascus).
* secure parking spaces and build multi-storey car parks on the outskirts of the old city.
* provide small nice looking trolleys with noiseless wheels so that visitors can cart their belongings while they walk the long miles.
