![]() Yesterday I went to The Arabic World Institute of Paris and I saw an exhibition about Sciences in the Arabo-Islamic World. It aroused a sense of Pride inside of me (especially for the atrolabs, Toledan tables....) and have shown to me how genius the arab scientists were. Anyway I guess you're fed up with what i'm sayin', if reader(s) there are/is. But give me (and you) 2 secondes more to see the Picture of this article. EXPLANATIONS: Al Jazari was a famous Syrian Engineer in mechanic who made this gorgeous system of pump. The donkey triggers the rotation of what I'll call the main shaft or the entrance shaft. Through a system of perpendicular pignon (Linear rectilign Link [ISO]), the plan (of the space) which contains the rotation is changed perpedicularly. The pignon is linked (embedded link) to camshaft and each of the four cames, pushs a pump. Then, it creates a translation movement of the pumps. You may have nocticed the cames or (cams [EN]) are shifted to enable the output rate of the whole system (water output) to be equal at each moment, [roughly speaking]. HMMMMM.... Now re-think it in a different way. You just have to follow the sytem in the other way and imagine. A gas enters one of the four pumps then it's lit and explodes that has for consequence to bring the stem of the pump up [one of the 4 mobile columns]. The stem of the pump is always in touch with the came, so it triggers the rotation of the camshaft and then, the rotation of the donkey. What flabergasted me is that it's the main idea of the spark-ignition engine (the most used motor). I saw a lot of other systems that I admire but I haven't done researches enough and this one seems to be the most famous one. If you are french and not so far from paris i advise you to glance at the exhibition. http://www.imarabe.org |
