s Al-Domari is whatDamascenes used to call the street-oil-lamps lighter, who is also known fortelling the best night stories and spreading the most outrageous rumors.
Al-Domari is a musicalthat talks about Damascus,Sarouja in particular, in 1884. It pictures a variety of personalities andpeople that used to represent the Damascene community that days, like the crazysimple minded Wally (Ottoman Government) who’s under the control of Aghas(the nobles), the sexist Sufi Sheikh and his Dervishes, the good heartedSheikh, buglers and the Abdayats, the Bedouin who never tasted 7alaweh,Al-Khazendar (the monetary advisor of the Wally), genies andtheir master…etc The play is a dramatic love story actually love stories, apolitical conspiracy, and the daily lives of Damascenes. The musical is a production ofGhoudran for art performance, which is actually composed of Joiinar for theaterdancing, Alisar for expressional dancing (or something like that :-p), Sana for music and Wanousfor theater acting.
The scenes’ decoration wasextraordinary and magnificent as well as the costumes, I liked the dialogue, the acting and dancing too. However the songs were all recorded which suckedbig time, I mean what good a musical is if its music isn’t performed live??Therefore I rate the play 6 out of 10. The play is currently presenteddaily in Dar Al-Assad of Culture and Arts till the 1st of March. |
