It was getting more and more chock-a-block at the Maharlika. A somewhat popular band from the Philippines, D'Baywalk Bodies, has come for a live performance at one of Dubai's most celebrated filipino night clubs. The overwhelming majority of the crowd was filipino but you could easily spot a table next to the stage with a number of fellas that look different. I could immediately tell where they were from. They were my kabayans, Syrians. I needed not wait too long as one of the band members thanked them for coming for the second time and cheered a big hello to Syria.
It might weird you out when you get to see how many Syrian-filipina couples are there in Dubai. Some of them are even married and have children. A mixed race is starting to show up. But no one ever tackled this mysterious relationship between Syrian guys and Filipinas. Why is it so popular? Any clues?
