Those following the Egyptian Judges’ Club’s battles with the state might be interested to hear about similar problems in everyone’s favorite beach resort police state, Tunisia. I got this as a text message from a Tunisian colleague a few days ago, but haven’t had time to post:
Basically, the news is that two judges who have campaigned for the independence of the judiciary have had their salaries docked for two months. The Tunisian government previously locked judges from the Tunisian Association of Magistrates out of their offices for issuing a statement in support of judicial independence after the government tried to muscle irritating judges out of the organization. I need to run now, but I’ll post more background soon. Briefly, though, I think it’d be nice to see some sort of solidarity campaign here. I was proud of Egyptian activists when they protested outside the Tunisian Embassy this past fall. More soon… |
