a new concept of saying "yes"

this was a very strange night. I went to the EICV show tonight, to support one of my friends in university (a talented video artist, who happens to be a very beautiful lebanese girl...).. I enter the SAT (where the show was held) and I ask the girls on the door if there was an entrance fee.. and the answer was: no, there is no entrance fee, but there is a suggested voluntary contribution of 4 dollars... speechless with a very confused smile, I reach out to a five dollars bill and give it to the girl on the door.. she takes the money, and with a verywide smile, she thanks me and lets me in.. and my dollar change goes away with the wind so, the no "fee event" turned out to be a "request for a voluntary exact sum" event, which turned out to be a "pay-whatever-you-give" event.. thank god I didn't hand her a 20 dollars bill... I didn't mind that much anyway.. if a few dollars can help an art event stay alive.. why not? better than spending on a beer pint that will eventually go down the sewers of some stinky bar... the only disappointment was, I was hoping for some good experimental movies there.. my friend's movie was good.. weird.. and raw.. just like I expected, and there were some crazy ones too... but again.. they were student projects and excercise.. something that is better published online than on a big screen.. but it's nice to see how much attention and how much care the local government gives to art.. especially when you support artists since they were still attending schools.. I guess this is what makes Montreal what it is. maybe I should submit something for next year's festival.. time to get off my ass and do some personal work in summer.. |
