It was a Temple of Jupiter in Roman times, later a site of Christian worship. Construction of a mosque suitable for the then-capital of the Islamic world started in the 8th century. It contains the head of St. John the Baptist in a shrine. These photos do not do the building justice, it's awe-inspiring. |
