What have I been up to for the past month…well…a little of this and a little of that. I took off for Lebanon and Syria for six days. It was great to relax and be taken care of.

"A journalist and anti-Syrian member of Lebanon's parliament was killed Monday morning when a massive car bomb exploded in an eastern Beirut suburb, opposition officials said.

Gebran Tueni, the head of An-Nahar newspaper who was elected to parliament this year, died in the explosion.

He had returned to Lebanon on Sunday from Paris, where he had been staying for fear of being assassinated, news agencies reported.

A Red Cross worker at the scene said four people died in the blast, which injured about 30 people and destroyed more than half a dozen vehicles.

A high-ranking Lebanese security source said Tueni's cell phone and laptop computer were found at the site of the bombing.

Journalist Anthony Mills called it "a scene of destruction," saying windows were broken in buildings for hundreds of meters.

Beyond the City

On Friday, Adham, Kyle, Chris, Jenny, and Sarah headed to Bani Swaif which is approximately 2.5 hours away. It was amazing learning about people who live in the country side, interacting with them, and giving involved in the community and volunteering.

After we arrived, the boys went and helped the farmers and the girls helped clear a roof of school from bricks and debris so they could build two classrooms and a playground.

Navigating the Streets of Beirut

Anyone in the Lebanese capital who has ever taken a taxi, ordered food for delivery, or asked for directions knows that when navigating the city of Beirut no piece of information is more useless than a street name. Trekking from one Beiruti neighborhood to the next is never a precise science of turning one way or another on specific streets but rather a loose art in, say, hooking left around a flower shop, passing a movie theater and a gas station, turning right at a bank, and stopping in front of a school opposite a vegetable stand. Ask a shopkeeper in Hamra for the way to Mahatma Gandhi Street, for example, and even if he has been operating a business on that exact street for 30 years, he will likely tsk and tell you it doesn't exist.
